Makikoubou Herbal Retreat

Herbal Retreat

Ancient steam-bathing wisdom meets the living scent of garden herbs.

For centuries, people across Asia have warmed and healed their bodies with gentle herbal steam.

In Japan, Empress Kōmyō offered medicinal steam baths in the Nara period,

and similar herbal steam traditions continue today in India and Sri Lanka.

Inspired by this lineage of plant-based healing,

we created a small, private steam retreat here at Makikoubou—

a place where time slows, breath deepens, and the senses open.

In the front garden, we restored the remains of an old Goemonburo bath,

transforming it into a low-temperature herbal steam room (around 40°C).

Breathe deeply into the warm steam of herbs grown in our garden

and let your body soften and unwind at its own natural pace.

Step outside for a fresh-air bath embraced by wind and light.

Changing and tea time are held in the workshop,

and those who wish to lie down may rest in the traditional “Front Room” of the house.

Natural fragrance. Honest warmth.

The comfort of taking off your shoes and simply resting.

We hope you will feel this gentle kind of richness during your time here.
